How Socialite Crime Club Used NFC Technology to Turn Convention Chaos into Thousands of New Subscribers

Trying to stand out at a convention for any creator can be a real nightmare.
At Crime Con, where most podcasters struggle to do just that, Socialite Crime Club hoped to make the most of their time on the convention floor.

One of their biggest challenges was subscriber growth. They weren’t alone — many podcasters at Crime Con shared the frustration that while it’s a fantastic place to network with fellow creators, it’s the worst event for acquiring new listeners and individual exposure. That’s when Socialite Crime Club used a novel, everyday piece of technology as one of the tools in their creative solution: NFC Tags

The Problem: Conventions Move Too Fast To Make A Digital Connection

At industry conventions, it’s not uncommon to hear that creators end up networking more with each other than with potential new followers. How do you quickly tell someone about your show, let alone capture them as a subscriber, when you have mere seconds of their attention?
In previous years, Socialite Crime Club tried capturing emails, but it was clunky and inefficient. Efforts to tell attendees their social handles often went misheard (and mistyped) into devices. Too much friction. Not enough new fans.

The Solution: NFC Coins for Instant, Frictionless Subs

Socialite Crime Club flipped the script. Drawing inspiration from their show’s lore — which includes the concept of exclusive coins — we integrated NFC technology into custom-designed coins that could connect directly to the show’s YouTube page.
Our team worked quickly, designing and 3D-printing the coins in the days leading up to the event. Each NFC coin was programmed so that when a potential subscriber tapped their phone, they were taken directly to Socialite Crime Club’s YouTube page, where they were automatically prompted to subscribe.
What made this approach so effective?
  1. Instant Engagement: No multi-step process. Just a simple tap that took people exactly where they needed to go.
  2. Time for Genuine Connection: Without having to fumble through forms or emails, Sy and Keri, the show’s hosts, had more time to engage in meaningful conversations with fans and potential new listeners.
  3. A Magical Experience: The coins added a fun, novel experience that left a lasting impression. People weren’t just subscribing — they were having a moment of “wow.” (referred to affectionately as “Harry Potter magic.”)

The Results: Thousands of New Subscribers

The results exceeded all expectations. Throughout the course of Crime Con, Socialite Crime Club organically gained thousands of new YouTube subscribers by using these NFC coins. What was once considered the worst environment for subscriber growth became an opportunity to innovate, and our strategy paid off.
The simplicity and magic of the coins challenged the typical convention approach, showing how frictionless interaction can completely change the game for subscriber acquisition. It wasn’t just about the technology — it was about creating an experience that people remembered.

Redefining Strategy with NFC

In a world where capturing attention is harder than ever, the lesson is clear: the fewer steps, the better. Creating a solution for every touchpoint of your brand’s presence is how we approach our clients’ challenges. Our goal is to make your process simple, fun, and magical.
As we continue to explore new ways to leverage NFC for subscriber growth, we’ll take this Crime Con success as a prime example of how innovation can break through even in the toughest environments.
